Your right to know why your premium went up
A rule adopted by Washington's Office of the Insurance Commissioner took effect on June 1, 2024. Auto and home insurers must tell you, on the first page of your renewal notice or bill, that you can ask for the reasons your premium increased — and must respond within 20 days. From June 1, 2027, increases of more than 10% must be explained automatically at least 20 days before renewal.
What the decoder does — and doesn't do
It ranks the reasons that most commonly drive the increase you describe, using general patterns. It can't see your policy, so treat it as a list of good questions, not a diagnosis.
For the details behind each reason, read why home insurance goes up or why car insurance goes up in Washington.
