Home + auto

Home and auto insurance, bundled

Bundling means insuring your home and your cars with the same company, which usually earns a multi-policy discount and puts one agent in charge of the whole household. It usually saves money — but not always, so we price it both ways and show you.

Does bundling home and auto insurance save money?

Short answer: Usually, yes: most carriers discount both policies when you hold them together. Whether the bundle is cheaper overall depends on how each policy prices on its own.

The discount is real, but it's applied to each policy's base price. If one policy prices poorly for your situation — a teen driver, a high-value home, a recent claim — the bundle can still cost more than splitting. We run it both ways.

What else you get besides a discount

  • One agent, one renewal conversation, one call when something happens
  • Coordinated liability limits, so your home and auto line up under an umbrella
  • Fewer gaps — for example, belongings stolen from your car are a homeowners claim, not an auto claim

When you should NOT bundle home and auto

Short answer: Skip the bundle when splitting is clearly cheaper for the same coverage, or when one carrier can't offer the coverage you need on one of the two policies.

  • The combined price is higher than two separate policies at equal limits
  • One policy would need to drop a coverage you rely on
  • Your home has a specialty need (e.g., a high-value or unusual property) better handled separately

Home + auto + umbrella: how the three policies work together

Short answer: Your home and auto policies each carry liability limits. A personal umbrella sits above both and pays after those limits are used up — so the three are designed to be set together.

A common household liability structure
LayerTypical limitRole
Personal umbrella$1M–$2MPays after home or auto liability is exhausted
Auto liabilityOften $250k/$500kFirst layer for car accidents
Home liabilityOften $300k–$500kFirst layer for injuries at home

Umbrella insurers set minimum underlying limits, so the bundle is where an umbrella starts. See umbrella insurance in Washington, or map your own household in the household coverage map.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bundle renters and auto insurance?

Yes. Renters + auto is a common bundle and an easy way to qualify for a multi-policy discount before you own a home.

Do I have to switch both policies on the same day?

No. We can line up start dates with your current renewals so you don't pay cancellation costs or double up.
