Rates & renewals

Why did my auto insurance go up in Washington?

Car insurance renewals rise mostly because accidents cost more to fix: modern vehicles are full of sensors and cameras, and medical costs keep climbing. Your own changes — a ticket, a claim, a new driver or vehicle — and lost discounts are the other usual causes. Washington's rate-transparency rule lets you ask your insurer which factors applied.

Reasons that have nothing to do with you

Short answer: Repair costs, parts prices, medical costs and regional accident and theft trends.

  • A minor bumper hit can now mean recalibrating radar and cameras
  • Higher medical costs affect bodily-injury and PIP claims
  • Regional theft and accident frequency shift rates by area

Reasons tied to your policy

Short answer: Tickets, at-fault accidents, an added driver or vehicle, a change of address or use, and expired discounts.

What you can do

Short answer: Review deductibles, confirm discounts, consider bundling, and drop collision only on cars where it no longer makes sense.
